It was last year when Mr. Frank Tumwebaze (Minister of ICT) explained that Uganda as a country was ready for Blockchain.

This was at the first ever African BlockChain conference, which happened at the Sheraton Hotel Kampala on May 23rd, 2018.

In a report by Sautitech, he noted that “the ICT ministry will continue to work closely with the private sector to explore how the blockchain can be incorporated in various industries.”

This was backed by the President of Uganda himself (Mr. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. He emphasized to the attendants that they had to be appreciative of and very inquisitive towards technologies such as blockchain and cryptocurrency.

“The government will discuss the possibility of adopting blockchain technology and look at the legal framework needed for its implementation, considering its benefits”,

Museveni said in a tweet.

Fast forward, it is 2019 and thus another Africa blockchain conference is yet to happen.

In a press conference (report from Daily Monitor), the Commissioner in charge of ICT (Mr. Julius Torach) said the government has formed a National Taskforce which shall assist to realize and make happen the Blockchain technology for the betterment of the country.

With the Africa Blockchain conference which is yet to happen on July 3rd and 4th (a year later), nothing has yet been manifested in the world of Blockchain by the Uganda government.

Hopefully, the government of Uganda is not late for the blockchain party because clearly technology is taking the swift path. The private sector and startup community so-far is doing a lot more with blockchain.
