This guide will walk you through some steps on how to share data bundles with Airtel, MTN, Africell, and UTL. We assume these are the most common telecoms in Uganda.

Sharing Data With Airtel (TUGABANE)

Airtel Uganda has a popular data share service commonly known as Tugabane. To activate Airtel Uganda’s Tugabane, use the following USSD shortcodes and steps.


Step 1: simply dial, *175*5#  on your phone
Step 2: Choose Sub-option 1- TUGABANE
Step 3: Select Activate
Step 4: Enter the phone number(s) of the people you want to share your bundle with


Note that your account, when you activate a data bundle and add other numbers, is called the Sponsor Account. You can invite up to four friends to benefit from your active data bundle. With Airtel, you can also buy bundles from another number.

Terms and conditions of sharing data on Airtel (What you need to know)

  • The charge for each Data Me2U is UGX 250.
  • Volume to share should be between 50 MB AND 2000 MB
  • The share amount shares same expiry date as the original account shared from.
  • Data Me2U applies to monthly bundles i.e. 125 MB to monthly 3 GB only
  • You can only share to the same number if it has already used up the first share.

Sharing Data With MTN (MTN Internet ME2U)

You can now send data bundles to your friends or family on MTN. Internet Me2U service gives MTN customers a chance to share their internet bundles with another MTN customer, by sending a portion of their data bundle to other people on the same network.

Through MTN Data Share, MTN customers have the flexibility to share across multiple devices in order to remain connected at any time, anywhere, and with anyone.


In a recent MTN press release, Larry Annetts, the Chief Marketing Officer, MTN South Africa says, “Data Share offers and flexibility to manage your accounts and the fulfillment and satisfaction of sharing the benefits of your package with your loved ones.

It enables our customers to share data that would otherwise have been lost, without incurring any expenses.” The same word from him, “Data Share gives customers who generally use data modestly an opportunity to share unused data with additional MTN numbers and members of their extended families who are on the MTN network, who can use it for a variety of applications, including downloading online gaming and streaming.”


To send MBs using Internet Me2U on MTN;


Step 1: dial *150*1#,
Step 2: Select option 6- Me2U
Step 3: Choose Data and continue by feeding in the amount of data you would like to share with the other MTN customer.


MTN Data Share is available to Prepaid, TopUp, Postpaid and My MTNChoice customers.

To activate this service, PAYG customers can simply purchase a data bundle via USSD at *1412*163# and then activate data share by dialing *141*5#.

Contact customers need to call MTN Customer Call Centre on 808 or visit any MTN branded store or via the MTN Web site.


With MTN Data Share, the main account holder can now add and link SIM-enabled devices such as dongles, tablets and modems and MTN numbers of their extended family and friends, free of charge. The main account holder can share data with these MTN numbers to ensure any unused data does not go to waste.

Sharing Data On Africell Uganda

With Africell, you can only purchase a data bundle for a friend or another Africell customer, but you cannot use the same internet bundle together at the same time. Africell Uganda has not yet started offering data share service.


To buy a data bundle for another Africell customer,
Simply dial *133# and follow the prompts.

Sharing Data On UTL

Uganda Telecom has a data share service called UTL Data Share. This service allows customers of UTL to share data/internet. A Uganda Telecom customer can always share data from 10 MBs up to 1000 MBs (1 GB)


How to share data/ internet bundles on Uganda Telecom


To share data bundles over the UTL network,


Step 1: Dial *100*5#
Step 2: Select share Internet
Step 3: Enter the recipient number
Step 4: Enter the amount of data you wish to share with the other Uganda Telecom customer on the network.

What you should know about UTL Data Share

  • The minimum amount of data that can be shared over the Uganda Telecom network is 10 MB internet data bundles. The maximum amount of data that can be shared over the Uganda Telecom network is 1000 MB. It is also the maximum amount of data you are allowed to share in a day.
  • If you are wondering whether you can share your mobile data bundle between 10 MB and 1000 MB, Uganda Telecom is assuring you that you can share a mobile data bundle for any amount, for example, 33 MB, 29 MB etc.
  • As you share your mobile data bundle with friends, you should remain with a minimum of 10 MB on your mobile number. You cannot possibly share all your Mobile Data present on your mobile number.
  • Data bundles that you get or redeem after purchasing a phone cannot be shared. All Bonus/Promotional data bundles cannot be shared. If you happen to share a data bundle with a number with a number that has another bundle present on it, the expiry date of the bundles on the sender number will be compared to the expiry date for the bundles present on the receiving number, then the longest expiry date will automatically be picked.
