A taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) is a unique identifier for a taxpayer. It is a legal requirement for any Ugandan conducting business with a 10 million turnover in over a year. This is how you can apply for a TIN number online in Uganda.
There are two types of TIN numbers, Individual and Non Individual TIN numbers. The Non Individual TIN numbers are usually for businesses whereas Individual TIN numbers are for tax-paying people i.e employees, workers, and any other persons. In this guide, we shall look at how to get a tin number for individuals and non-individuals online.

Method 1: How to get a TIN Number using the new Web-Based System
With this new method, everything is done purely online, you can apply and get your TIN number in less than 48 hours from your computer. There’s no need to engage in long queues or move long distances to the nearest URA offices. Below are the steps on how to apply and get URA TIN numbers for individuals & non-individuals in Uganda.
Head over to the URA website and navigate to the e-service section. Tap eServices on the homepage.

Under eServices, select TIN Registration which will open in the new tab.

Before starting the TIN Registration process, read through the taxpayer’s rights, obligations, and requirements for applicants. Then Click the start your TIN application button.

Enter your email address and choose the type of application (individual or non-individual). A unique code will be sent to your email address.

Copy the unique code and enter it in the Unique Code section. Then click proceed.

On the next page, provide all the requested information and submit your application when finished. Bear in mind you can save changes and come back later.
At the top right corner is the ‘Log out’ button use it to exit the application window
TIN Number Application Requirements for Individual applicants
- For Citizens/Residents; a National Identification Number (NIN) or Alien ID Number
- For Non-citizens; any valid two of the following;
- Passport
- Driving licence
- NSSF Card
- Work Permit
- Visa
- Refugee ID
- An appointment letter or Employment ID (for employees)
- A registered Business name (if you are engaged in a sole proprietorship business)
- A valid email address
- A valid Mobile phone number
TIN Number Application Requirements for Non-Individual applicants
- A Business Registration Number (BRN) – Mandatory of Uganda
Incorporated/registered entities - A valid email address
- An authorized contact person (an individual)

Method 2: Apply for TIN number online in Uganda
- Open your browser.
- Visit http://ura.go.ug
- Scroll down to segment with a blue background then select Download online forms.
- A new page will open, click on DT 1001 under e-form. This will download the TIN application/registration form.
- Save the template with the particular system name ( do not try to rename the file).
- Before filling out the template, enable macros by following the instructions provided on the sheet labeled help, on the form (template) you have downloaded.
- Fill in the forms, especially all areas marked with the red star * under different sheets; Section A-C, Section D-E, Section F-H, Schedule 1-4, and Schedule 5-6.
- After filling in the required information, save it and click on Validate found at the bottom of the sheet Schedule 5-6.
- Save the upload file.
- Prepare to upload the e-file.
- Log onto the web portal.
- Click on e-services from the menu.
- Choose the type of registration preferred for instance register TIN as an Individual or Non-Individual or Group Registration.
- Another page will open, tap the select drop-down icon and choose new form.
- Enter applicant name and tap on Choose File and select the upload file from the location you saved it. Type the letters and numbers in the box.
- Click the box to agree to the terms and conditions.
- Tap the upload button. Then click on Submit button.
- The e-acknowledgment receipt and all application information will be generated. Print it out.
- Present the receipt, signed terms and conditions papers, 2 passport photos, and national identification card to the DT / URA offices near you within 10 days for acknowledgment, TIN approval, and generation.
- Then finally, you will receive a TIN certificate.
