What is Blackjack?

Blackjack is a card game played between you – the player – and the dealer. You’ll both be dealt two cards to begin with, which you must total together to try and get as close to 21 or on the nose.

What is the aim of Blackjack?

The aim of a game of Blackjack is to hold a hand of cards that total 21 or as close to 21 as possible, without exceeding, whilst also holding a higher hand than your opponent – the dealer.

Has Blackjack always been called Blackjack?

Actually, no, it hasn’t. It first burst onto the gaming scene in France called Vingt-et-Un, which translates to English as ‘Twenty-One’.

It wasn’t until a few decades ago when some American casinos wanted to boost the popularity of the game, as well as draw players into their establishment, that they decided to add bonus payouts if players met the requirements of such bonuses.

One such bonus that was added to Twenty-One, as it was known back then, was the Black Jack bonus. This required a player to hold a hand containing one of the deck’s two black Jacks and the Ace of Spades. Not only would the player receive the bonus payout for the Black Jack bonus, but they also won the game as the Jack and Ace totaled a value of 21.

As the bonuses faded, the Black Jack bonus name stuck, and as they say – the rest is history.

What are the playing card values?

The numbered cards found within a standard deck of cards are equal to the number stated on the card itself. For example, the Ten of Clubs will hold a value of ten, whilst the Two of Diamonds holds a value of two.

The Royal cards – Jack, Queen, King – all hold a value of ten.

The Aces, however, are different from all other cards in the deck, as they hold two values – one or eleven. It’s down to the player holding the Ace in their hand to decide which value the Ace holds. This allows the player to use the Ace to their advantage.

Will other players around the game table affect my chances of beating the dealer?

A game of Blackjack is against you and the dealer, no one else – they have no impact on your gameplay or the cards you’re both dealt within gameplay. The same can be said for you, as you have no effect on the game the dealer plays with anyone else sitting around the game tables, both in person or virtually.
