Truecaller is a smartphone application that has features including caller identification, call blocking, flash messaging, and call recording. It is an online app that requires cellular data or Wi-Fi to execute its duty. It is available for download on the Playstore and Appstore. While it has many features, TrueCaller is mostly popular for its caller identification, a feature that enables users to know who is calling in case unknown or unsaved numbers call.

Many smartphone users are using the app currently since it is helpful when looking to avoid getting spammed. The question, however, is how the application can identify callers or in brief, how it works. This article better explains this feature.

How does Truecaller work?

As part of an end-user agreement that is initially presented to prospective users, the Truecaller app requests access to your phonebook or contact list. Unfortunately, it is no secret that few people take time to read these agreements before they tick the “I agree” checkbox. After a user grants Truecaller access to their phonebook data, this data is uploaded to the company’s servers. It is then put through several filtering and refining algorithms before being made available for other Truecaller users to search upon.

In brief, therefore, TrueCaller gives as it takes. It gives you information about who is trying to reach you, and in return takes your phonebook data and makes it available to other users. To create a Truecaller account, you must have an already existing Facebook, Gmail, or Yahoo account. If you don’t have one of these it is impossible to open a TrueCaller account. Why? Well is it because these three media platforms have the most users and therefore have endless lists of contacts and user information. So when you log in, your entire contact list is accessed by the app and sent to the servers. They are then assigned a Truecaller id. When someone with the app searches for one of the numbers on your contact list, the id associated with that number is provided to the person in question.

In conclusion

Because the era of the internet means a world connected by the web, if even one person in the people who know you and have your number in their contact list uses the TrueCaller app, your name and number are made available to the database. This brings us down to two questions, are there advantages of using Truecaller? Yes. Are there disadvantages? Yes, definitely.
