The technology of thermal optics: it’s interesting!

The choice of the type and model of weapons depends on the game and the method of hunting. For shooting from short distances, a mechanical sight is sufficient. A reflex sight is perfect for quick aiming. For hunting at medium and long distances for small animals and sports target shooting, a thermal scope is installed on the weapon. It will increase the chances of an accurate shot.

What is a thermal scope?

A thermal scope is a common telescope with a crosshair. The first lens telescope was invented in 1609. It is not known exactly who installed it on the weapon.

The first models of sights were primitive, bulky, up to 80 cm long. Later, the design was improved. A propeller for adjusting the fire has appeared, the optics have become better. In the middle of the 20th century, the variable fold was added.

What is the telescopic thermal scope made of?

1. Lens

Yellowish or blue-green fine-sprayed lens system. A special film on the glass prevents light from reflecting, increases the light output, and improves quality.

2. Wraparound lenses

In the thermal scope, the image is reversed. To avoid this, two additional lenses are used. They are called a wrap-around system.

3. Reticle

Etched from thin foil. If you need a more complex drawing with rangefinder risks, it is engraved directly on the glass.

4. Eyepiece

The optical system of several lenses with a focal length of 50-70 mm. There is a rubber anti-glare eye cup, usually. The image is called «the exit pupil».

5. Mechanism for introducing ballistic corrections

Micrometric screws look like drums to change the position of the reticle. There are sighting and tactical ones (they allow you to constantly adjust the fire depending on the distance and ballistics). All screws are serrated.

6. Illumination of the aiming reticle

To better see the reticle at dusk, the modern scope covers LED illumination.

7. Housing

Metal tube with blackened anti-reflective coating inside. All sight assemblies are mounted in the body. Made of aluminum alloy, sealed, inexpensive models it is filled with nitrogen, which protects the lenses from fogging.

Main characteristics of a thermal scope

There are many technical characteristics in optical sight. Of these, we distinguish three main ones:

  1. Allowable muzzle energy.
  2. A multiplicity of sight, increase.
  3. Variable or fixed multiplicity.

Elite optics are expensive. This is normal under the condition of peace production and unique technologies. For a year, such scopes are produced as much as serial ones in a week. The calculation is made for experienced amateur hunters and professional snipers.

The mid-range segment is a practical choice at a reasonable price.

There is also an initial price level. It does not mean poor quality. It’s just that in recent years, Japanese companies have been transferring part of their production to China. Likewise, it turns out cheaper, but no worse.

Do not confuse budget models with Chinese crafts. They are produced by some unknown person and where copy expensive models, but cannot withstand even one shot.

The quality and therefore the cost of the optics must be comparable to the weapon on which it is installed. Look at AGM Global Vision: the best quality and price.
