What is California rummy?

California rummy is a rendition of rummy where the game is played with a deck of cards consisting of 54 cards in place of the 52 cards deck. The primary objective of California rummy is to play each and every card you have before all the opponents. You can achieve it by building sets and runs. A total of 10 rounds are played in a single game and each of these rounds is called hands. With each succeeding round the level of difficulty increases. Each player is assigned points as per the cards they still own. Scoring the lowest point among the rest of the players will make you the winner.

Requisition of California rummy

The rules of California rummy are slightly more intricate than the other variations of rummy. Below are the regulations and rules you have to follow to play a fair game:

  • You can play the game in a group of 2 to 6 people. However, the decks required to depend on the number of players playing the game.
  • If you are to play in a group of 2 to 4 people then you need 2 decks of cards. On the other hand, if your game has 5 or 6 people then you need 3 decks of rummy cards.
  • Unlike other types of rummy in California rummy, a total of 4 jokers are present. Out of these four jokers, two are in the regular printed form and the rest two are from the black suits with denomination 2.
  • You can use the card joker only in a few circumstances. When you form a set the number of joker cards cannot exceed the number of other cards. For instance, if you have a combination of 6 ♠ and 6 ♣ with a joker or 6 ♠ and 6 ♣ with 2 jokers then these combinations are granted. However, if you have 6 ♠ and two jokers this combination is not allowed.

California rummy rules

The game of California rummy requires you to know certain rules that are applicable in different rounds of the game. That implies every round requires different sets and runs to be achieved by the players in order to win the game. Below are the rules you need to abide by to continue till the end of the game.

  • The dealer distributes the cards to all the players. With each round ending the dealer changes.
  • Every player gets 11 cards after every round. The remaining cards in the deck are placed on the virtual table facing down the table.
  • The top card is also placed alongside the remaining cards. The top card becomes the upcard. Hence the top card acts as the opener of the pile of discarded cards.
  • With each turn from the beginning, you get to take 1 card from the discard pile. Every player gets to do so when their turn comes.
  • When you discard one of your cards it becomes the upcard of the discarded pile.
  • The player playing next can take that card by replacing one of his cards. A player can also buy that card even if it is not his turn. For that, he has to say “BUY” before claiming the card.
  • If a card is not claimed by anyone it becomes a dead card. Besides, a card is also considered dead when someone discards his card.
  • Melds are considered when you make it following the melding rules. The melding format changes with each round.
