1. On your browse visit the iTax filling portal.

2. Log in to the iTax portal using your KRA PIN and password.

3. Select ‘Return‘ from the navigation menu and click File Returns.

4. Select your tax obligation then click Next.

5. Download the tax returns form in Excel or ODS format and Unzip it.

6. Once the excel sheet is opened, fill in the tabs about basic information, employment income, details of the PAYE deducted, and tax computation.

7. Click on the Validate button to validate the data.

8. Upload the Excel sheet and click on the Submit button.

9. Lastly, download the KRA returns Acknowledgement Receipt.

How do I file my KRA NIL Return Online?

As long as you are a Kenyan Citizen above the age of 18 years with a KRA PIN, you are supposed to file your annual returns. Filing of Nil Returns is for taxpayers who do not have any source of income. Speaking of the source of income means that the taxpayer does not have Business Income, Rental Income, or Employment Income.

  1. Go to KRA iTax portal.
  2. Enter your KRA PIN and password.
  3. Go to the Return menu and select File Nil Return.
  4. Select your type of taxation and tax obligation.
  5. Enter your KRA PIN.
  6. Enter your details and the return period.
  7. Complete them and then Submit them.
  8. Download the KRA returns Acknowledgement Receipt.

What is the penalty for not filing NIL return?

The penalty for not filing NIL Returns is 10% of the tax involved, up to a maximum of Ksh. 1 million.
