Blogging has been part of me ever since I was 18 and it’s something I have done for a long time. Starting up a blog in Uganda is misunderstood with facts like expensive, technical, and time-consuming. Nevertheless, these are all baseless misconceptions that need to be tarnished. I started my first blog with less than 20$ (Approx. Shs.70000) and besides no initial blogging knowledge. So today I want to share with you the essentials of blogging in Uganda. Below is a detailed analysis of the 5 things you need to understand before starting up a blog in Uganda.

Requirements of blogging

Starting up a blog in Uganda would require you to at least have a computerized device and internet access. I stated a computerized device to include smartphone & mobile users, during my first blogging experience I used a smartphone because I could hardly afford a laptop by then. So you shouldn’t be exceptional at blogging in case you never possess one.

Domain name & hosting service

Getting a domain name in Uganda would cost you around 10$ (Shs.30000) from Ugandan local web host providers like crystal and others. However, if you need hosting from big companies like Bluehost it’s far cheaper but you will need at least a Payoneer master Card to access some of these services. Hosting from Uganda will not cost you more than $5 per month which is a bit budget-friendly. I would recommend Crystal Webhosting Uganda to host your website because it’s what I personally used while starting. If you need an international hosting company I would recommend Namecheap since it’s a bit cheaper or Bluehost. you can also read about my article on how to get MasterCard in Uganda to ease your online transactions in your future online business.

Update: You can buy a domain and get Webhosting for a year at UGX 80,000 on Namecheap. These days I shifted all my websites to Namecheap considering it’s the cheapest web hosting and domain registration service provider on the internet and their customer support are on point. In case you don’t know how to go along with this, email us at [email protected], and can we can make an article about this as well.

Choosing a blogging platform

On the web, there are many blogging platforms but I would recommend you get started with either WordPress or blogger since they are popular and have a varsity community that can provide support throughout your blogging career. Personally, I would recommend WordPress because of its ease to learn, use and the varsity community support. However, to make it clear, all these platforms have a free package for starters which I don’t recommend more especially If you are planning to earn some money from your blog.

Choosing a niche or topic.

Here you must be in a position to identify a topic you are very well conversant with. I have tried as much as possible to include some of the topics you can choose to blog about below;

  • News
  • Health
  • Technology
  • Insurance
  • Marketing
  • Business
  • Sports
  • Relationships & lifestyle
  • Fashion
  • Education
  • And many others

Common knowledge & skills

My subtopic looks a little bit funny but I had no better way to put it across. But before you start blogging you will need some common knowledge like how to use a computer, using the internet, typing and editing articles, and perhaps even researching.

Final Thought

Blogging can be challenging especially when you’re just starting. That is why you need to identify a blogging niche that interests you. It is easy to give up if there is no motivation. Blogging is fun and can be rewarding at the same time. More Ugandans need to pick up the blogging culture.
