With the freedom to create and grow, people interested in STEM have increasingly pitched and watered their ideas to make every field a fertile ground for development.

As the gender debate continues to inflate, the tech industry quickly catches up and lays a safe space. This space welcomes, empowers, and equips the much needed female community with the necessary skills to crack the code of technological stagnation.

Today, women are slapping the right card, one onto the other, as regards teamwork, learning and implementing. If you have a sister, you may want to interest her in one of these women tech communities in Uganda to help her grow a career through innovation and technology.

1. Women in Tech Uganda (WITU)

In addition to their inspirational goal, WITU trains and empowers females to pick up on careers in technological fields. This community has built many an exemplary woman whose focus is on tech, business, and growth.

What to expect at WITU

Through their mentorship programs, WITU has bridged the gender gap in technology careers and has also encouraged women to create Small-to-Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

WITU opened the first women-focused tech and business hub. This is meant to support early-stage and growing women SMEs in Uganda.

The community offers a collaborative environment and supports young women in skills development and local capacity building. This support is offered in order to improve the lives of women and girls who have the zeal to start off a career in tech and entrepreneurship.

The knowledge shared drives economic and social development in Uganda and the neighboring regions.

2. Andela Women

Andela Uganda rolled out a flagship tech-leadership program for Women in Technology, and it qualifies as one of the women tech communities in Uganda. The program offers tech skills to females in areas of software delivery, entrepreneurship as well as leadership and community.

Andela certifies participants and opens them up to career opportunities in other organizations or even internally.

Skills offered by Andela Women

In her software delivery skills, Andela introduces programming fundamentals to the participants and they learn how software is delivered.

This community also teaches ladies to work out solutions to real-life problems through coding. As Andela provides entrepreneurship skills to community members, they get the opportunity to interact with professional entrepreneurs and innovators and get advised on how to proceed with their tech careers.

At Andela Women, learning facilitators offer feedback on tasks worked on by participants and encourage them to jump out of their comfort zones. This allows the ladies to grow and become leading technologists.

How to join

To join the Andela Community, you have to go through the Andela Fellowship, you must be 18 or over. Doing Andela is committing yourself for 4 years, so one has got to clear their table before they commit, especially if they’re eyeing full-time employment.

3. Zimba Women

ZimbaWomen is a brainchild of Zimba Group Limited. Zimba provides training and skills to women who are ready to find their place in the economy. It creates opportunities for women and encourages them to participate in the development of their economy.

ZimbaWomen draws programs that bring women together to foster meaningful participation in business and entrepreneurship. This is possible through implementation of projects with the leadership skills provided in this community.

At ZimbaWomen, members work to eradicate poverty and put an end to a world with unequal benefits and to narrow the gender income gap. In this community, women are given access to digital platforms as a way to connect them to markets and entrepreneurs.

The mentors also see to it that women are able to use tools of Information and Communication Technology and adapt them in business.
