What is an eSIM?

eSIM, or “electronic SIM,” is a tiny chip inside your phone that replaces a physical SIM card. It stores your phone number and carrier info digitally, allowing you to switch carriers without changing physical cards. Unlike physical or regular SIM cards, the eSIM is embedded in your device.

Which Network Providers have eSIM?

There are only two Networks or telecom service providers that support eSim in Uganda. That is Airtel Uganda which was the pioneer of the eSim initiative followed by MTN Uganda.

Other telecom service providers like Uganda Telecom and Lycamobile Uganda have not yet embarked on this new eSim trend.

How to get an eSim in Uganda & What you need?

The requirement for eSIM registration or activation is a valid identity document (valid national ID, passport, or Refugee card). To find out if your phone is compatible with this technology, dial *#06# and if an EID number appears, that’s a clear indication that you are good to go.

MTN charges 3,500 for new eSims and Airtel charges $2500 for new eSIMs. Swapping from a regular SIM card to an eSim is free. Also, your device should support eSim functionality.

Once you have the requirements figured out. Visit the nearest Airtel or MTN-authorised retail shop to get your eSIM.
