Uganda’s First Electric Bike also known as Zembo is an innovation by two French engineers in Uganda whose mission is to change public transportation from relying on gas to electricity. As you read now, Zembo electric bike is on trial in Uganda’s capital, Kampala where motorbike taxis are the quickest means of public transport. Zembo provides affordable electric motorcycles for motorcycle taxi drivers in Africa.

About Zembo

Zembo, an automotive company started its work of distributing Electric Bikes way back in April, joining up with a list of other companies, including Ampersand in Rwanda and Pfoofy Power & Light Limited in Kenya that are dealing in electric motorcycles in East Africa.

Zembo partners with SafeBoda to bring us Uganda’s First electric bike

The company is patterning with ride-hailing company SafeBoda who are testing Uganda’s First Electric Bike in Kampala, which tests have been carried on ever since mid-October.

Zembo’s electric motorcycles are powered by Lithium batteries which are recharged using solar energy. Electric vehicles are fast-gaining market reception because of their contribution to environmental conservation and the possibility of reducing transport costs.

What Does Uganda’s First Electric Bikes have to offer?

Moses Musinguzi was the first tester of Uganda’s First Electric Bike and he was proud to mention how this innovation will suit Uganda’s transportation services together with conserving the environment.

Pros

The Bike has:

  • Zero fumes, which is great for our environment
  • Zero sound
  • No consumption of fuel
  • High-end tech Charge and very fast in terms of speed

The battery recharge fee is 5000 and can currently be done from the three charging centers in Ntinda, Wandegeya, and Najjanakumbi

In later months, more service centers shall be put in place.

Security-wise, the electronic bikes are remotely GPS controlled and can be switched off remotely. Isn’t that cool !?!

The Electric bike is also cost-efficiency. For a normal bike, it may cost you 35-40 km per liter of petrol, thus 75km may cost up to UGX 8000, as stated by Mr. Musinguzi from SafeBoda. We haven’t yet been told about the power consumption, thus can’t conclude on this particular point.

In addition to that, the new electric bike has

  • Zero cost of engine servicing
  • Inbuilt speaker for music which is connected to the phone
  • Phone charging port and
  • An automatic transmission

Conclusion

From what we see, Uganda’s first electric bike has quite a lot to offer, in comparison with the normal bikes. However, since it is still under testing, we are yet to hear from the everyday users who will start interacting with it when it rolls out.

Technology has caught up with the local boda-boda men, however, are they willing to take it on?
