Fortunately, transferring motor vehicle ownership in Uganda can be done online on the Uganda Revenue Authority web portal, making the process more convenient and efficient. The process of transferring ownership involves changing the already registered names for a motor vehicle to another name. This can be as a result of a sale, gift, Court Orders, Police instructions, etc. This is similar to changing car log book details.

Please Note;

  • If a private individual sells a vehicle to another person, the number plates should not change.
  • If a corporation with duty-free status sells a vehicle to a private individual, taxes must be paid and the duty-free status ends.
  • Corporations with duty-free status can sell to other corporations with similar status and keep the number plate, but they must inform the Ministry of Finance.
  • Transfers of vehicles with personalized number plates or from a minor require special authority and in cases where a letter of administration exists, the transfer should be made to the depreciated value of the vehicle.
