iMessage, Apple’s proprietary messaging platform, introduced read receipts as a feature that informs the sender when their message has been read by the recipient. While this transparency can be valuable in certain situations, there are times when you may prefer not to disclose your read status. The good news is that Apple allows users to customize their read receipt settings. In this guide, we show you how to stop sharing Read Receipts for texts on an iPhone-iMessage.

There are two ways through which you can reclaim your privacy and manage read receipts in iMessage depending on your preferences. You choose to disable read receipts for everyone or customize them for specific contacts. Let’s show you how;

For Everyone;

1. Navigate to the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.

2. Select Messages.

3. Scroll down to ‘Send Read Receipts” and disable the features so that read receipts are deactivated.

For Individual Chats;

Go to the Messages app and launch a conversation with the individual you don’t want to share read receipts with. This feature will be available if you have an existing conversation with the individual. Next, tap the profile picture at the top of the screen and toggle off Send Read Receipts.

Quick Note: If you turn off read receipts, you won’t know if others have read your messages. Instead of disabling the Read Receipt feature, you can go offline before opening the messages or read them from the notifications on your iPhone’s Lock Screen or Notification Center if you don’t want to let the sender know you’ve read their messages.
