What’s special about Snapdragon 855?

Samsung Galaxy S10+/S10/S10e

Samsung recently unpacked its Galaxy S10 series with best possible specs and hardware. The entire S10 families. Galaxy S10 Plus, Galaxy S10, and Galaxy S10e is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 chipset (globally). For countries like India, Samsung ships them with its own Exynos 9820 chipset.

The South Korean conglomerate is offering them with up to 1TB of internal storage and 12gigs of memory. The trio comes with punch hole screens which Samsung prefers to call as infinity- o displays. Apart from packing one of the best smartphone displays and cameras, other key highlights of S10 series include wireless charging, wireless power share, headphone jack, expandable storage, and IP68 rating.

Samsung also introduced a Snapdragon 855 5G version of the Galaxy S10 Plus which will retail in the US in the months to come.

Galaxy Fold

Alongside the S10 series, Samsung also showcased its futuristic Galaxy Fold. As the name implies, it’s a foldable smartphone featuring a 7.3-inch screen that folds to easily fit in pocket.

The Samsung Galaxy Fold featuring Snapdragon 855 chipset will go on sale in the US next month (i.e April 2019). The phone will come with 12GB RAM and 512GB of storage. Samsung has packed its first foldable phone with a triple-lens 16MP+12MP+12MP rear camera.

Samsung claims to have optimized it’s One UI for Galaxy Fold’s screen and the handset can run up to three apps side by side. DJ Koh, president and CEO of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung recently confirmed the Galaxy Fold India lunch without revealing the timeline. Most probably, the Indian variant of Galaxy Fold will be powered by Exynos 9820 chipset.

LG V50 ThinQ

LG V50 ThinQ is another Qualcomm Snapdragon 855-based smartphone which debuted this year at MWC 2019. The South Korean smartphone maker’s 2019 flagship is also 5G ready.

Apart from the chipset, LG V-series flagship hasn’t really changed much compared to its predecessor. The phone comes with 6.4-inch 2k+ P-OLED display. LG is offering it with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. It runs on Android 9.0 Pie.

Lenovo Z5 Pro GT

This phone was the first phone to be announced with Snapdragon 855 chipset. The Z5 Pro GT comes in multiple RAM and Storage variants ranging between CNY 2,698 (~Rs 28,000) and CNY 4398 (~ Rs 45,000), and the top model excesses with 12GB RAM and 512GB storage.

Other highlights include IR based face unlock, notch-less full-view display, dual Selfie a slider concealing dual selfie cameras, Android Pie based software, and a modest 3350mAh battery.

Xiaomi Mi 9

Xiaomi had a fantastic 2018 and it has already introduced its 2019 flagship – the Mi 9. Like every other phone in this list, the Mi 9 rocks a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset and Adreno 640 GPU.

The Mi 9 also comes with a waterdrop notch AMOLED screen that features 5th generation in-display fingerprint sensor. A gradient holographic effect can be seen on the Mi 9 rear panel. There is a triple camera setup including a 48MP sensor on the back. Though Xiaomi announced the Mi 9 globally, the phone is yet to reach Indian shore.

Vivo Apex 2019

Vivo’s new Apex has a button-less and port-less (well, almost) design and is powered by Snapdragon 855 octa-core chipset paired with up to 12GB of RAM and 512GB storage. The volume and power buttons are pressure-sensitive, and the magnetic port on the rear can be used for battery charging and data transfer.

Sony Xperia X1

Sony’s mobile division hasn’t had the best of times in recent years. It is nowhere near its past glory. With hopes of reinventing itself, Sony announced the new Xperia X1 at MWC 2019.

The new Sony flagship phone introduces in design language and at the center of to its is massive 21:9 6.57-inch display. It is powered by Qualcomm’s later workhorse – Snapdragon 855, coupled with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. Sony has also added tri-camera setup at the rear end and side mounted fingerprint sensor.

8. Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G

At MWC 2019, Xiaomi launched 5G variant of their existing Mi Mix 3. The phone is powered by Snapdragon 855 SoC along with Snapdragon X50 modem. Though, Xiaomi is yet to reveal RAM and storage details of the Mi Mix 3 5G variant.

As for optics, the Mi Mix 5G boasts a 12MP AI dual camera setup similar to the Mi MIX 3 (standard). Xiaomi also offers several AI based camera features and 960 fps slow-motion video capabilities, among other things.

OnePlus 7 (Upcoming)

The OnePlus 7 is still a few weeks away but rumors and leaks have started to reveal important aspects of the “2019 flagship killer”. Recent OnePlus 7 leak suggest possible edge to edge screen, triple rear camera setup, and an elevating front camera. One thing that is virtually confirmed is the presence of Snapdragon 855 chipset in next OnePlus phone.

In fact, OnePlus is already working on a 5G phone that will debut with Snapdragon 855 with X50 5G Modem that will be launched in Europe in partnership with EE network. OnePlus 7 is likely to come with Optic AMOLED screen, in-display fingerprint sensor and up to 256GB storage. It could feature up to 12GB RAM.
