Never in your wildest dream would you fully navigate and discover all the 800 million interesting videos on YouTube without recommendations. The success of YouTube’s recommendations feasts on accurately predicting videos that the account holder would like. The recommended videos will appear on your home page and right at the end of each video. These recommendations are compiled considering both your watch history and search history on the YouTube platform. What do you do in circumstances where YouTube recommendations do not suit your interests anymore? The answer is basic, simply reset YouTube recommendations. This guide compiles 4 different ways how you can reset and change your YouTube recommendations.

1. Remove Video and Channel Recommendations

As you scroll through your YouTube home page and you encounter a video that you are disinterested in, let Youtube know immediately that the particular video disinterests you or refute recommendations from that particular channel. Under the settings of each displayed recommended video, there are provided options like “Not Interested” and “Do not Recommend Channel.” To remove a particular recommendation, tap on the three vertical dots (More Menu icon) next to the video and select either “Not Interested” or “Do not Recommend Channel.”

If you are not interested in a particular video but you like other content from a YouTube channel, select “Not Interested.” However, if all the videos from the particular channel suck and you would not want them to appear under your recommendations category ever again, select “Don’t Recommend Channel.”

2. Remove individual videos from your watch history

YouTube feeds off by offering users different recommendations based on their watch history. Now, if a particular recommendation on a particular topic keeps popping up on your YouTube home page, and yet you are disinterested, you can consider removing a video you previously watched on that similar topic from your watch history. This may reduce the chance of similar recommendations appearing in the future. For instance, if you have watched 5 minutes craft, YouTube will continuously offer you more recommendations from that ‘5 Minutes Craft’ channel or what other people who watch the ‘5-minute craft’ channel like and other channels that produce similar content to the ‘5-minute crafts’ channel. Therefore, by making the decision to remove or delete watch history on that topic, you will have discontinued recommendations on that topic.

  • Open the YouTube app.

Alternatively, you can go to YouTube.com, tap on Library followed by History, select the video that you want to remove, and tap on the cancel icon (X).

3. Remove individual searches from your search history

Every time you research a particular topic or channel on the YouTube platform, the algorithm perceives that you are now interested in content related to the searched topic or channel. However, the subject might not interest you as predicted by the algorithm. If you notice recommendations on a subject you are disinterested in, try removing a previous search on that topic. It may reduce the chance of similar recommendations in the future.

  • Open the YouTube app.
  • Tap on the Library section in the bottom right corner.
  • Tap on History.
  • Now tap on three vertical dots in the top right corner and select History Controls.

4. Clear and Pause Watch and Search History

Sometimes, it might feel like all the YouTube recommendations are just not your thing and you would want to erase all recommendations and start all over again. Clearing and pausing your watch and search history will stand out for you if the entire watch and search histories are no longer relevant to your interests. To clear watch history or search history simply;

  • Tap on Library at the bottom menu bar and click on History.
  • From the right panel, click on “Clear Watch History” and confirm action as urged by the prompt.
  • After clearing watch history, tap Watch and Search History from the right panel.
  • You will be referred to the next page, and turn off the YouTube History option.

Once you have completely deleted all your YouTube watch history, all your video recommendations will be reset, but may still be influenced by activity on other Google products.

Pro Tip: If you do not want both your search history and watch history to influence your recommendations in the future, you can choose to pause search/watch history or use YouTube incognito.
