MTN Uganda Removes Mobile Money Charges Courtesy of COVID-19

The Coronavirus is setting trends as far as the economy is concerned, a lot is happening now. The Republic of Uganda banned all public gatherings in Uganda for 30 days until the government is sure the virus can’t easily spread in Uganda.

But looks that’s not the only outcome of this, telecom company MTN has also removed mobile money charges for all peer to peer transactions.

In the move to protect all users from getting coronavirus through physical cash, the telecom company has made several changes some including removal of mobile money charges. For example, peer to peer charges of under Shs.30,000 currently does not have any charges with an aim of helping individuals to use less of money and more of cashless payments.

It’s important to note that this is part of the emergency plan and will start effective midnight today.

So today you can transfer money from MTN wallet to bank, make peer to peer payments with no transaction charges.

According to a statement signed off by the company Chief Executive Officer – “Following a discussion with the Central Bank and some of our escrow partner banks in minimizing the likelihood of the transmission of the coronavirus by the handling of physical cash, the following emergency tariffs have been proposed to encourage the use of mobile money as opposed to the handling of banknotes as a precautionary measure”

For 30-days, customers can send up to Ushs 30,000/- Mobile Money every day to other MTN MoMo customers free of charge. The offer is meant to reduce the risk of transmission by avoiding the physical exchange of currency notes

The offer comes alongside a day-time data bundle that will enable Ugandans to stay on-line and work from home. Customers will get 1GB of data at just Ushs 2,000 valid between 9 am and 5 pm.
