I recently imported contacts from iCloud and email to my new iPhone. Well, although I successfully got all the contacts on my device, I happened to see duplicates as well. Yes, from time to time, you might find yourself winding up to duplicate contacts on your iPhone especially if you own more than one Apple device. What’s more frustrating is that each of these contacts might contain different information, so we can’t just delete one of them, as we’ll lose some of the contact information. That is why you can choose to merge duplicate contacts on your iPhone.

How to Merge Duplicate Contacts on your iPhone

Step 1: Start the Contacts app on your iPhone.

Step 2: Find one of the duplicate contacts and tap on it.

Step 3: Tap on Edit.

Step 4: Scroll down to the bottom of the page and tap on Link Contacts.

Step 5: Tap on the other duplicate contact from your contacts list.

Step 6: Tap on Link in the top-right corner.

Step 7: You should now see both contacts listed under Linked Contacts.

Step 8: Tap on Done.

Quick Note: Merging contacts does not overwrite any information from either contact but instead merges them into a single card. If you have any outdated information, such as old addresses, phone numbers, or emails for a contact, you should make sure to update or remove the information manually.

How to Unlink Linked Contacts on your iPhone

  1. Open the Contacts app.
  2. Find the merged contact and tap on it.
  3. Tap on Edit.
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the page and tap on the red button next to either of the linked contacts.
  5. Tap on Unlink.
  6. Tap on Done at the top of the screen.
  7. Your contacts are now unlinked. You can edit them as you wish.

How to Delete Duplicate Contacts on your iPhone

  1. Open the Contacts app.
  2. Find the contact you want to delete and tap on it.
  3. Tap on Edit.
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap on Delete Contact.
  5. Tap Delete Contact to confirm.
  6. Your duplicate contact is now deleted.
