Using Media Creation Tool

In cases of an upgrade or a fresh copy installation of Windows 10 on a system using UEFI, you may choose to use the Media Creation Tool to create a compatible bootable media. Just insert a USB flash drive with at least 4GB of storage to your computer and follow the steps below.

  • Visit the official page of Microsoft and download Windows 10 version
  • Under Create Windows 10 installation media, click the Download tool now button.
  • Click the Save button.
  • Open folder button by clicking Open
  • Double-click the MediaCreationToolxxxx.exe file to launch the utility.
  • Agree to the Microsoft terms by clicking Accept
  • Select the Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file) for another PC option.
  • Go to Next
  • Choose the language you prefer, the correct architecture, and edition of Windows 10 if the default selection doesn’t reflect the desired options.
  • Go to Next.
  • Select the USB flash drive option.
  • Click the Next button.
  • Select the removable drive from the list.
  • Click the Next button again.
  • Once you’ve completed these steps, the wizard will download the Windows 10 installation files, and it’ll create the bootable media with support for UEFI as well as legacy BIOS automatically and the only thing you will do next is to install the Operating system to your preferred computer.

Using Rufus

Alternatively, you can download the Windows 10 ISO file from a different source and then use the Rufus tool to create an installation media with UEFI support. Rufus is available for free download on the official website of Rufus, then connect a USB flash drive with at least 4GB of space, and follow the steps:

  • Open the official Rufus page.
  • Under Download, click the latest release of the tool.
  • Click the Save button.
  • Click the Open folder button.
  • Double-click the Rufus-x.x.exe file to launch the tool.
  • Under Device, select the USB flash drive with at least 4GB of space.
  • Under Boot selection, click the Select button on the right.
  • Navigate to the Windows 10 ISO file.
  • Select the .ISO image.
  • Click the Open button.
  • Use the Image option drop-down to select the Standard Windows installation option.
  • Use the Partition scheme and target system type drop-down to select the GPT option.
  • Use the Target system drop-down to select the UEFI (non CSM) option.
  • Under the Show Advanced drive properties section, leave the default settings.
  • Under the Volume label field, enter a descriptive name for the drive.
  • Under the File system and Cluster size section, leave the default settings.
  • Click the Show advanced format options button and make sure that Quick format and Create extended label and icon files options are selected.
  • Click the Start button.
  • Click the OK button to confirm that the USB flash drive will be wiped out.
  • After completing the steps, the Rufus tool will create a bootable medium, which you can then use to install Windows 10 on devices using UEFI.

Once the USB bootable with support for UEFI has been created, you can start your device with the installation media to perform an upgrade or a new installation of Window 10.

Things you may need

  • Windows 10 install.iso file or DVD
  • A USB flash drive with at least 5GB free space.
  • An idle computer where you’ll format the USB flash drive.
  • EaseUS Partition Master
  • Your new PC – which you’ll install Windows 10 on it.

Note that before you start installing Windows 10, you must first format the USB Drive and Set the Primary Partition as Active. If you do not know how to format, follow the steps below to format your USB into required partitions.

Select the USB drive to format.

Connect the USB drive or pen drive to your computer. Download and launch EaseUS partition software. Right-click the USB drive you intend to format and choose “Format”.

Assign a new partition label, file system (NTFS/FAT32/EXT2/EXT3), and cluster size to the selected partition, then click “OK”.

Click “OK” if you see the Warning window. If you have important data on it, back up the data in advance.
