In 2017, the government of Uganda through the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) directed all telecom providers and their subscribers to verify SIM registration against the National Identification & Registration Authority (NIRA) database. SIM cards can only be activated after NIRA verification.
The mandatory SIM card registration requires all customers to present an original national ID for Ugandans, valid passport for foreigners and refugee ID for refugees. UCC introduced a short code 197 to enable subscribers to check their registration status and check ID number.

- Dial *197#, then OK.
- Select 1, Check Registration Status.
- Your registration status will display on your phone.

- Select 7, My account.
- Choose 4, Registration Status.
- Select 1, Customer Registration Status.
- Your registration status will display on your phone.
