Airtime is a Telecom currency and it is being used to buy data bundles (internet bundles), voice bundles, e.t.c. The same airtime is also being transferred between users within the same network. For example, you can only transfer airtime from Airtel to Airtel or from MTN to MTN.

NOTE: Airtime or Data transfer is not possible across different telecom networks i.e from MTN to Airtel.

This rule of transfer applies to sharing data also. You can easily transfer airtime and share data using USSD code, SMS, and the service provider’s mobile apps like the MyMTN app.

How to transfer airtime and share data on MTN using Mobile Money:

To transfer airtime to a loved one/friend on MTN Uganda;

  • Firstly; dial *165#
  • Secondly; Select option 2 – “Airtime & Bundles”
  • Then choose option 1 – “Airtime”
  • After that, choose option 2 – “Buy for other”
  • A text box saying “Enter Number” will come. Type in the MTN Uganda number you would like to buy airtime for or transfer airtime to.
  • Confirm it is the right person’s phone number you are transferring to and enter your mobile money pin to confirm the transaction.

To transfer data on MTN Uganda, do this:

  • Dial *165#
  • Choose option 2 -Airtime and Bundles
  • Choose option 3 afterward –internet bundles
  • Then choose option 2 – other number
  • Select whether you want to buy them a daily bundle, weekly etc and continue
  • Select the number of mbs and continue
  • And then enter the Recipient number
  • Confirm it is the person you want to actually buy data for and enter your mobile money pin to carry out the transaction

You can also use the MyMTN App and skip all the USSD Huddles.

Alternatively

  • Dial *160#
  • Choose option 6 Me2U
  • Then choose whether you want to transfer airtime or data with options 1 or 2
  • Input the number to send to
  • Input the rest of the details to correctly transfer data and airtime.

How to transfer airtime and share data on Airtel:

To share data on Airtel;

  1. Dial *175*5#
  2. Choose Option 1: Tugabane. (Tugabane lets you share the internet bundles you will be loading with whomever you have added)
  3. Choose option 1 Activate and add mobile numbers you want to share your data with
  4. After that, the person you have added will use any data bundle activated on your line with you (only until you choose to deactivate the tugabane service)

Alternatively, you can share data via Airtel Me2u

  • To use Airtel’s me2U data sharing option;
  • Dial *175*5#, and choose option 2.
  • Enter the Phone number of the beneficiary and share your data with them.

To Transfer airtime on Airtel Uganda using Airtel Money

  • Dial *185#
  • Select Option 2 – Airtime
  • Selection Option 1 – Buy Airtime
  • Choose Option 2 – For Another Number
  • After, Enter the person’s phone number
  • Enter the amount of airtime you want to buy them
  • Confirm the transaction by inputting your pin (Proof-read the number and name of recipient before sending)
