What is a VPN? A virtual private network (VPN) is defined as an encrypted connection over the Internet from a device to a network.

This encrypted connection facilitates that sensitive data is safely transmitted. Using VPNs prevents unauthorized people from eavesdropping on the traffic and allows the user to conduct work remotely.

In Uganda, Facebook is currently banned. Means Ugandans can not access Facebook. The way that Ugandans are currently using Facebook is by using VPN apps that assign them virtual locations outside Uganda.

Among the easiest ways of connecting devices that inherently do not support VPN apps is through a shared VPN connection created using your Windows 10/11 computer.

Install your VPN provider’s Windows App. You can download the Surfshark VPN Windows App from here. When you install the VPN App, it will create a TAP Network Adapter that will be used in later steps.

To get things started, create a mobile hotspot on your Windows PC. Selected devices will connect to this WiFi hotspot in order to access your service provider’s VPN network.

Creating a Mobile Hotspot on Windows 10 is done this way, right-click on the network icon on the taskbar. Next, click on Network & Internet settings.

After that, click on Mobile Hotspot on the left-side panel. Afterward, turn on Mobile Hotspot. Assuming all these steps have been executed successfully, you will get an auto-generated Network Name and password. These can be changed by clicking on the Edit button.

The next step is to click on Wi-Fi on the left-side panel and scroll down to Related settings. Then, click on Change Adapter options to reveal all network adapters on your computers.

Next, select the network Adapter created by the VPN App. You should see something like TAP-Surfshark adapter. On the next step, we are going to share this network adapter’s internet via the mobile hotspot created earlier. Right-click on it and select properties.

Then, select the Sharing tab. Strive to make sure that the option says “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection” is checked. Beneath the Home networking connection dropdown, select the Mobile Hotspot created earlier. It should contain “Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter”. Click Ok.

Conclusion

Congratulations, your VPN connection is shared to your devices through the Mobile Hotspot. Start your VPN App and change the VPN protocol to OpenVPN. Also, you can use UDP or TCP version of OpenVPN, the choice is yours.

You can also connect your VPN to any of your preferred locations.

All is done, now you can connect your device to the Windows Mobile Hotspot created earlier. The entire network traffic routed through this hotspot will automatically go through your VPN’s network.
