6 Ways to Secure Your Webcam on a Laptop

A webcam is a video camera allowing videos to be seen by internet users. As you are reading this article, someone might be watching you through the web camera. I am seeing you panic already, however, you do not need to worry for there are a few ways that can enable you to secure your webcam on your laptop.

1. Cover the Webcam

The first and time-friendly option requires you to seal/cover the webcam. This will definitely be a lifesaver for no one will watch you through the webcam since they will only see darkness. You can cover the webcam with a tiny piece of paper then attach the tape.

2. Disconnect the Webcam

To secure your webcam, only connect it when you need to use it. For the time being, if you do not hope to use the webcam in the near future, then you should consider disconnecting the webcam. That way, you will be safe from any threats, and compromises.

  • Go to device manager.
  • Under Cameras, spot the Webcam.
  • Right-click on it then select disable.

3. Keep Software, antivirus, antimalware updated

Ensure that at all times your software, antivirus, and anti-malware are up-to-date. Software companies are working tirelessly to keep their products from exposing vulnerabilities which include being hacked into.

On Mac

  1. Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
  2. Click Software Update to check for updates.
  3. Tap on the Update button.

On PC

  1. Click Start, navigate to Settings and click Update & Security.
  2. Click Windows Update, then click Change active hours.
  3. Set your preferred start and end times for active hours, then save.

4. Use a Secure Wifi Source

Ensure to only connect your device to the secure wifi source to prevent yourself from being prey to the hackers. If you are using your home router then endeavor to set a more secure password and username.

5. Use a Firewall

A firewall is a network security system that monitors traffic to and from your network. In short, the firewall is a gatekeeper that protects you from web hackers. All computers come with an inbuilt Firewall.

On Mac

  1. Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
  2. Click Security or Security & Privacy.
  3. Click the Firewall tab.
  4. Unlock the pane by clicking the lock in the lower-left corner and enter the administrator username and password.
  5. Click Turn On Firewall or Start to enable the firewall.
  6. Click Advanced to customize the firewall configuration.

On PC

  1. Select the Start button.
  2. Select Settings, then Update & Security, then Windows Security, then Firewall and network protection.
  3. Choose a network profile.
  4. Under Windows Defender Firewall, switch the setting to On or Off.

6. Don’t Click on Suspicious Links

Just by clicking on that short suspicious link, you might have given the hacker access to your computer including your web camera. Therefore only click on links from trusted sources or that are detailed.
