Whenever Wi-Fi is available use it

The best advice I could give is use Wi-Fi anytime you get a chance. Whether it is at work, a restaurant or a public facility, don’t hesitate to use it. Set your Phone to connect automatically whenever Wi-Fi is on. Likewise, set your updates to download only on Wi-Fi, for more than 100MB apps, and when streaming large videos.

Put a stop to your notifications

Everyone has notifications or alerts popping up on their phones. Same are necessary. Others—not so much. As much as you can, disable your device’s GPS, email and push notifications, automatic updates when they aren’t needed.

Close background apps

Apart from battery drainage, background running apps guzzle data. It happens to the best of us as we keep switching from one app to another. All you have to do is close those not in use.

Regularly scan your phone

Malware also consumes data. So scan your phone regularly to deal with any if available.

Set billing cycle and data warning alerts

This is one of my favorites. It shows you how much data you are consuming. If you set a data limit of 5GB for a month and you exceed that it automatically turns of the data. It is located under settings as ‘data usage’. Under this setting, you can also restrict background data usage.

Turn off auto-play of videos

We all guilty of scouring through You Tube, Instagram, Facebook. While there, you have no control of what pops up, usually videos. These videos tend to create a loop one after the other. You can avoid this by turning off the auto-play feature in the apps settings. Android users have an upper-hand as Netflix and You Tube GO offer data saver mode to cut down usage.

When streaming videos on YouTube, use the lowest resolution to save your data. Alternatively, use apps that consume less data like Facebook lite instead of the Facebook app.

Use data compression in Chrome

Any android user has access to this feature in chrome. It significantly reduces data consumption. All you traffic is passed through a proxy run by google. It is compressed and optimized before being sent to your phone. To use it, open Chrome, tap the menu on the top-right corner, tap Settings then scroll down to data saver.
