The Internet is the global system of interconnected computer networks that uses the Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to communicate between networks and devices. It is a network of networks that consists of private, public, academic, business, and government networks of local to global scope, linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless, and optical networking technologies.

The above definition might be more complex given some people know the internet as that which they subscribe to from their network service providers in form of data (internet) bundles.

Things to test when checking if the internet is working or not

When your online activity slows down or is non-existent, you will 9/10 times mostly tell that your internet is not working. Or that thought will go through your mind. But just because you notice that your internet is not working does not necessarily mean that it is not working. Here are some ways to troubleshoot your internet connectivity:

a) Firstly, check your internet bundle

You do this by typing the specific SSD codes into your phone to check whether you have an actively running internet bundle or not. For MTN users, the SSD code for checking mobile data balance is *131#. You will see the MBs you currently have.

b) Secondly, try loading a different website

In case you are browsing and the web page refuses to load. Try a different website to see if it will work. If it works, then the one that refused to load has a problem.

c) Thirdly, check the WiFi settings

You do this to make sure you are not connecting to the wrong network or hotspot by default. There are those hotspots that are open to any device. As long as your device’s WI-FI is enabled, your device automatically joins that network. If you are connected to the wrong network, forget the network and connect to the right one.

d) Fourthly, how many devices are connected to the same network

At times, you might share your network with others or you might be on a shared network with others. Depending on how many people are connected to that same network, the internet speed or responsiveness is affected. If you are too many for the network to handle, the internet will not work.

e) Check your signal

If you are connected to a WI-FI connection, the distance your device is from the source plays a big part. The nearer you are, the better the signal. When you are far, you might not enjoy the internet so much.
