One way for employers to ensure that their staff members are covered by NHIF is to pay their contributions directly to NHIF on their behalf. In this article, we will explore how employers can pay their staff members’ NHIF contributions via M-Pesa, a popular mobile money service in Kenya.

Step 1: Generate the E-Slip/By-product number from the NHIF Portal

  1. First, download the NHIF By-product Excel sheet from the NHIF website then open the Excel sheet and fill in the required details, including the names and NHIF numbers of the staff members, as well as the applicable contribution amounts.
  2. Once you have filled out the Excel sheet, log in to the NHIF online portal using your login credentials.
  3. From the dashboard, click on the “Upload By-product” button.
  4. Upload the filled-out Excel sheet containing the by-product information.
  5. Once the by-product has been uploaded, NHIF will validate the information to ensure accuracy.
  6. Once the by-product has been validated, submit the information to generate an E-Slip.
  7. Finally, print the E-Slip to obtain the by-product number that you will use to make the payment via M-Pesa.

Step 2: Make Payment via MPESA

  1. Go to the M-Pesa menu on your mobile phone.
  2. Select the “Lipa na M-Pesa” option.
  3. Choose the “Paybill” option.
  4. Enter the NHIF Paybill number, which is 200222.
  5. Enter the by-product account number, which should be the staff eSlip number.
  6. Enter the contribution amount that the staff member is required to pay.
  7. Enter your M-Pesa PIN to authorize the transaction.
  8. Review the transaction details and confirm that they are correct.
  9. Finally, send the payment.

That’s it! The payment should be processed within a few minutes, and you’ll receive a confirmation message from M-Pesa once the transaction is completed.
