Today, 3rd February 2022, Equity bank Uganda launched an account opening service on the phone using the USSD *247# code! Speaking during the launch at the Bank headquarters in Kampala, the Bank Product Development Manager, Nelson Bamwine said that with this new innovation, one can acquire a bank account within three minutes. The self-service platform enables users to open an Equity account without visiting the Bank, giving potential customers convenience and fast account opening services. The entrepreneurial bank has been known for creating innovative services for their clients such that they can access services more easily.

Equity Bank Uganda Limited is one of the fastest-growing banks in Uganda, with a large network of 43 branches, 4434 Equi Duukas, 1279 POS Terminal, and 48 ATMs spread across the country. 17 of these branches are located in Central and greater Kampala, serving over 530,000 customers.
In 2018, we saw them unravel the first agent banking service known as Equi Duka and this allowed customers to access the bank’s services without going to the bank. Instead, one simply has to visit a verified Equi duka agent and that alone allowed them to make whatever transactions they desired. The banking services available through *247# include balance inquiry, access to mini statements, funds deposit, money transfer from Equity to mobile wallets or between Equity accounts as well as facilitate payments,” Bamwine said.
This new invention could spike-increase Equity bank’s bank accounts because of the excellent level of ease. We are yet to see if it will be that user-friendly.
How to open Equity Bank Account with USSD Code (Requirements)
To open an account using the *247# code, one will only need a valid national ID and a registered personal mobile phone number.
The bank account will be active immediately. The type of account opened will be the ordinary savings account with no monthly charges
Tech should be simplified, especially access to funds now that everything is digital. Way to go Equity Bank.
