Oops! You just deleted a file on your Chromebook and now you’re looking for the trash folder to retrieve the file however, you have failed to find the folder. Unfortunately, Chromebooks do not have preinstalled trash or Recycle bin folders like other computers on the market. Before you frown, the fortunate thing is that you can enable the recycle bin folder in Chrome Operating System. Once the recycle bin folder is enabled, you will not have to worry about deleted files since you can always retrieve them within 30 days.

The other thing to note is that the Recycle Bin feature runs on Chrome OS 89 and later versions. Upon enabling the feature you will be prompted to restart your Chromebook, so make sure you’ve saved all of your work before you dive into these steps.

1. Start your Chrome browser on our Chromebook and type chrome://flags in the address bar.

2. Under the flags page, type trash in the search bar.

3. You should see Enable Files Trash listed. At the moment, the option will be in the default state. Tap on the drop-down menu next to Enable Files Trash and select Enabled.

4. Click the Restart button so the changes will take effect.

5. After your Chromebook restarts, log back in and open the Files application. You should see the new Trash icon in the left sidebar.

How to Locate a File in the Trash Folder on Chromebook

1. Open the Files app upon restarting your Chromebook.

2. Find the Trash icon in the left sidebar and click on it.

3. The trash folder will then open and from there you will locate a file that you recently deleted. Since files have a life span of only 30 days in the Trash folder before automatic deletion, some files won’t be available. If the file is available, you can restore it to its original folder or completely delete it from the trash folder.

How to Restore or Delete a File from the Chromebook Recycle Bin

1. Open the Trash folder on the left sidebar of the Files app.

2. Right-click on the file that you would like to restore.

3. From the pop-up menu, select Restore from Trash. If you want to permanently delete the file, select Delete.
