Why you should register your Sim Card in Uganda

Due to increased criminal activity, the Government of Uganda and Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) requires that all Ugandans who own phones register their Sim Cards using their National IDs (National Identity Cards). Failing to do so means that one cannot be able to use their phone to call their friends, family e.t.c. Internet access privileges from the telecom service providers cannot be accessed as well.

With this, the government is able to identify and arrest any criminal plots done via phones.

Choosing option 1 “Check registration status” is for verifying if your sim is registered at all.

  • On Airtel, if you are registered, it returns your names and the phone number that was registered to the National ID.
  • On MTN, it only returns your phone number without the names registered to the NIN.

Why you should not register a sim card for someone else?

So, let us say you were helping five friends of yours to get registered Sim Cards under your National ID. You’ll have 6 Sim Cards registered to your name. Some time passes by, and you are no longer in touch with some of your five friends. You do not what they are doing, where they are, the places they hang around e.t.c.

Then Police come and arrest you saying they have evidence that you were involved in a crime, the sim card that was used during the incident is registered to your name. Clearly, you did not commit any crime. One of your five friends did. But how will the police know that you have five different friends with sim cards registered to your name? Things will be looking bad for you.

Perhaps none of your five friends turns out to be a criminal. But then, one of them gives out your sim card to someone who is a criminal. The government is saying it will be arresting whoever’s registration details are involved in a crime. This article shows you ways to check how many SIM cards are linked to your National ID/NIN number in Uganda. In that way, you can easily block a Sim Card that you have suspicions about.

NOTE: If you find out that any other sim card number is registered under your NIN and it is not your own, report this to your telecom service provider. This can happen in cases where your National ID details are stored digitally and accessed illegally by another party.
