How to Take Screenshots on a Mac

These are two simple ways to take a screenshot on your Mac. To capture the whole screen, press ShiftCommand3, and if you want to capture a portion of your screen, then press ShiftCommand4. By default, the screenshot will be saved to your Desktop folder.

To Change Screenshot Location

There are different ways in which you can change the screenshot location on your Mac. This depends on the operating system running o your Mac.

For macOS Majave or later

Press Shift-Command-5 to launch the screen capture panel, then tap on the click on Options and choose “Other Location,” choose the preferred new screenshot destination then click on Choose.

Prior Mojave

1. Launch the Finder window and press Shift-Command-N to create a new folder where you want your screenshots to be saved, and give the folder a recognizable name.

2. Launch the Terminal app (found in Applications/Utilities).

3. Type in the following command and then press the spacebar, but don’t hit Enter just yet: defaults write com.apple.screencapture location

4. Now drag the folder you just created into the Terminal window. The folder’s path should appear after the command you typed in. Press Enter.

5. Your captured images will now be saved in the designated folder whenever you use the screenshot shortcuts.

Once you’ve restarted the System UI Server, take a screenshot to test that the new location is working correctly. Press Command + Shift + 3 to take a screenshot of the entire screen, or Command + Shift + 4 to select a portion of the screen.
