Here are some of the steps you can take to block a website in windows 7 . This trick can work for windows versions such as 7, 8, and 8.1.
How it works ?
- Open the Host file in Notepad or any other text editor (plain). For devices running on XP, Vista, Windows 7 and 8, the file will be located using the path C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.
- Look for the line “127.0.0.1 localhost”. Do not edit any existing code since it may affect your web browsers .
- Enter the URL of the websites you wish to block below this line. For example, if you want to block access to Facebook, the line should read “127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com
- Save and close this host file.
- Restart the computer to save and apply the changes
Important Note: I recommend you backup your host file such that you can retrieve it in case of any mistakes. You can do this by copying and pasting the existing information somewhere on PC.

#Method 1 : Use Parental Controls to block website on Mac
- Open System preferences and select Parental Controls
- Now select the Child’s Account and if the child doesn’t have account you can create one for them.
- Open the Web tab ( Some older versions of Mac OS X have a “Content” tab instead )
- Look through the options to block websites
- “Allow access to only these websites” blocks all sites not specifically listed below this option. Add and remove sites using the + and – buttons .
#Method 2 : Use Host file to block website on Mac
- Open Terminal Application . Applications > Utilities > then terminal
- I recommend you backup your host file such that you can retrieve it in case of any mistakes . You can backup host file by typing sudo /bin/cp /etc/hosts /etc/hosts-original in terminal and press enter.
- Enter you administrator password once prompted by terminal .
- Enter the following command sudo /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit /etc/host to open the host file .
- Never delete any of the texts in host files since it will stop your browsers from working . As such navigate to bottom and type 127.0.0.1 .
- Hit the space bar, then type the URL you would like to block . Do not include http:// . For example, if you want to block access to Ugtechmag, the line should read “127.0.0.1 www.ugtechmag.com
- You can now add more URLs on new lines by following the procedures above. Remember to start each new line with 127.0.0.1.
- Close and Save the host file.
- So all you have to do next is flush the cache (Option) to allow the above procedures instantly take place.
