Requirements for NHIF Registration

  1. Scanned copy of your National ID
  2. Scanned copy of the marriage certificate where applicable
  3. Your recent passport-sized photo and spouse’s where applicable
  4. A birth certificate is needed for children over six months
  5. A letter of appointment or letter from an employer for employed individuals to show you are in formal employment. The initial NHIF contribution will be deducted by your employer from your salary and be remitted to NHIF.

How much will I Pay for NHIF Registration?

The NHIF application is free of charge. NHIF members under the voluntary category (self-employed) pay Ksh. 500 per month (Kshs. 6000 per annum) as contributions. These payments should be made before or on the 9th of each month. According to the NHIF website, payments made after the 9th of the following month will pay a penalty of 50% (KES 250) of the voluntary monthly contribution. A member will be required to pay outstanding arrears and/or penalties to access services.

Step 1: Get started by navigating to the NHIF portal.

Step 3: You will be referred to a new page where you will be required to select your occupation status. Choose between self-employed, employee, and employer options. Strictly go for the option that suits your status.

Step 4: You will be presented with the application that you are required to fill in with accurate information. You will be required to select the Identification type, enter your ID number, name, date of birth, area of residence, marital status, email address, phone number, and choose the nearest NHIF branch.

Step 5: Attach member identification document and member’s passport photo (you might be required to add more documents depending on the membership that you selected earlier, I choose self-employed, and my sample procedure is based on that).

Step 6: Once you are done filling in all the required information. Tap on Click to Confirm to finalize the registration process. An SMS confirmation of your application will be sent via the number you provided.

Including your Children and Spouse on your NHIF Account

Once married and have kids, you might want to include your kids in your NHIF account. You can do this by visiting the nearest Huduma center or NHIF branch with the following documents:
