Airtel Uganda is a mobile communications and information technology services provider in Uganda, The Company also offers mobile funds transfer and banking services known as Airtel Money. Airtel Uganda Limited is a subsidiary of Bharti Airtel Limited.

The company was founded in 1995 as Celtel Uganda, the first mobile telephone company in Uganda. In July 2007, Celtel Uganda changed its brand name to Zain Uganda. In 2010, Bharti Airtel acquired majority shareholding in the business and the name was changed to Airtel Uganda. In 2013, Airtel Uganda acquired the assets and subscribers of Warid Telecom cementing its position as the number 2 mobile telephone network, behind market leader MTN Uganda

The headquarters of Airtel Uganda are located in Airtel House, at 40 Wampewo Avenue, on Kololo Hill in the Central Division of Kampala, the county’s capital and largest city. The coordinates of the headquarters are 00°19’09.0″N, 32°35’43.0″E (Latitude:0.319167; Longitude:32.595279)

Airtel Uganda is the second-largest mobile network provider in the country, with an estimated 9.8 million subscribers in December 2016, representing a market-share of approximately 44.5 percent, given that there were 22 million cell phone users in Uganda at that time. Airtel Uganda in partnership with Kola Studios a leading mobile games development Company in Uganda launched a mobile phone application for the popular social card game ‘Matatu’. This launch attracted many phone enthusiasts, game lovers, journalists and airtel customers who were all excited to try out this new app and also take a look at the display of airtel mobile gadgets.

In February 2013, airtel Uganda officially launched its partnership with UGO Uganda. UGO Uganda is a web portal that provides diverse information and local content ranging from local news, entertainment and sports, technology and is one of Uganda’s largest online business directories. At a function with airtel Staff, UGO Uganda staff and the then minister of Information and Communications Technology, Hon. Ruhakana Rugunda, airtel announced that it will be zero rating the internet site for all its airtel subscribers. This means that all airtel subscribers can access UGO site at no charge at all.

On April 23rd, 2013: Bharti airtel (“airtel”), with operations in 20 countries across Asia and Africa, said that it has entered into a definitive agreement with the Warid Group (“Warid”) to fully acquire Warid Telecom Uganda.Airtel consolidated its position as the second largest mobile operator in Uganda with a combined customer base of over 7.4 million and market share of over 39%. Customers enjoy wider network coverage and distribution reach as well as innovative world class affordable products & services.

The agreement brought together the strengths of airtel and Warid in Uganda and offer benefits to customers in the form of a superior and wider network, affordable voice and data services, and superior customer care. They enjoy, amongst other things, benefits of the ‘One airtel’ network with lower roaming rates across Africa and South Asia, an exciting bouquet of innovative services and access to exclusive Premier Club services for High Value Customers.

In May 2013, airtel renewed their partnership with the Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (FUBA). This partnership was first conceived in 2012 when FUBA opened a new chapter in the Men and Women’s Basketball League by unveiling the new name National Basketball League with Uganda’s fastest growing telecommunications company, airtel. It has since been known as the airtel National Basketball League. This partnership renewal was fueled by airtel’s realization that basketball as a game in Uganda had a lot of fans and therefore there was need to professionalize it and package it in a way that would benefit all the players, the fans and the different team managements. Present at this launch was FUBA president Mr. Ambrose Tashobya, Mr. Onyik John Bosco and Mr. Ali Balunywa who was representing airtel at the event.

Airtel Uganda Hosts Arsenal Legend

Since Arsenal welcomed airtel into its family of commercial partners with the airtel & Arsenal: join the club promotion, the two brands have worked hand in hand especially in regards to football.

As part of this partnership, former Arsenal legend Laurean Bisan, who retired from active football and dedicated his life to helping other sportsmen by setting the standard when it comes to injury rehabilitation, came to Uganda for a few days. He was mainly here to motivate, encourage and give a few tips to the young footballers countrywide to join the airtel Rising Stars and maybe one day have an opportunity to be part of the great international football clubs such as Arsenal. In his three days here he got a chance to meet some of the young players, FUFA representatives, airtel staff and members of the media.

Airtel And Warid Revolutionize Mobile Money

Airtel Uganda money

In May 2013, airtel and Warid synchronized their mobile money services in a bid to lead the Mobile Money revolution.

As a result of this synchronization, airtel Money and Warid Pesa now work as one which means customers can send and receive money from one mobile money platform to another without any extra charges.

Another important part of the airtel mobile money revolution was done in partnership with Stanchart and Equity bank. This partnership was done to ease the lives of all airtel and Warid customers by enabling them to withdraw their money from all Equity bank and Stanchart ATMs. This means that there are more places to withdraw money and customers do not have to look for airtel branches and specific dealer shops.

The final partnership launched in connection with airtel money was the Multiplex partnership. This partnership enables airtel customers to pay parking fees using airtel money, no need for parking tickets or automated machines, as long as there is money available on the airtel money account.
