You can free up space on an Android device by moving or deleting files, removing app data and apps, removing downloaded music, movies, and other media, and also removing photos.

Space on an Android device is used to help the device run smoothly. Some apps also require space to run well without freezing or lagging. Space is also needed to store files on your device.

New Android devices come with their storage space empty. With time, this space gets filled up and the device at times slows down in performance. Some apps will tell you your storage is low, freeing up more. Usually, the Google Play Store asks you to free up some space before it installs updates to some apps in case your storage is low.

How to free up space on your Android device

a) Firstly, by moving or deleting files

Android devices typically come with internal storage and external storage. Internal storage is inbuilt memory. It is where the apps you install are found. It also houses cache and other related data like photos, files, etc.

External storage is mostly a memory card. In case you do not know whether your phone supports external memory, you can check the sim tray for a memory card slot. Or look up on the internet whether it supports external storage.

In case you do have a memory card with some free space on your Android device, you can move files from the internal storage to your memory card. You can also move the files to a hard drive or to your PC.

The other alternative is to delete the files you no longer need permanently from your device.

b) Secondly, by removing app data and apps

Data created by apps is known as app data. System-level app data, platform data, data exhaust, configuration data, cache data, and content data are all examples of app data and they take up space depending on the app.

An app is software designed to run on devices. Mobile apps are designed to run on mobile devices.

You can uninstall apps that you no longer use. There are those apps that you install to use but just don’t seem to get the time to use them. Uninstall them to free up space!

You can also clear an app’s cache and data through your phone’s Settings app in case you still need the app.

c) Thirdly, by removing downloaded music, videos, and other media

You can delete downloaded music, videos, and other media that are on your device.

d) Lastly, by removing photos

Photos these days take up a lot of space. This is due to the enhancements in the quality of photos cameras take. The quality is way better than the cameras phones used to have 3 or 4 years ago.

Better quality photos mean more space occupied by the photos. Android phones usually back up photos to Google Drive. So you can comfortably delete those photos already backed up to drive from your storage.

You will still have access to the deleted photos from the drive. But before you delete any photo, make sure your photos are fully backed up to Google Drive.

The photos that you no longer need can be deleted permanently.
