While you wake up to go to your office to knock out duties and tasks given to you by your boss, have it at the back of your mind that one day you might not be able to do all you do the way you do it. It’s important that you keep equipping yourself with a new skill each day, keep up with the speed at which the world is moving such that you’ll be able to live comfortably with machines and not be so average as to become irrelevant in the white-collar job market.

Machine learning and Artificial intelligence, together with Robotics are becoming quite a thing, with the diversification of technologies. What has been known as “white-collar jobs” for a while now will be called “white-collar automation”. This should give you an insight into the veracity that you might not have a “job” anymore, as your duties will be knocked out “automatically” by machines. Humbly, try to condense the idea that not much of your effort might be required anymore.

Where is this automation?

Look no further, the technologies are already in operation on our farms and milling industries (agriculture), they are in our hospitals, law firms and in IT spaces among others. Today, human beings are doing less work, and even if this is advantageous to the health of a man who needs to rest really, these machines are cutting the necessity of human labor in different industries.

In health care, for instance, Artificial Intelligence is being used in handling patient experience. As patients are shifted from one department to another, AI should be able to study the patient’s condition and suggest which department can best handle the condition of this patient. If the patient cannot be handled by the available resources in that specific hospital, suggestions of hospitals with the necessary equipment will be made all through the automation. Also medical personnel such as nurses should have knowledge on how to operate different automation tools. As such, they will be able to handle several patients at once.

How is the automation working in law firms? Lawyers are humans who are tasked with the challenge to review countless documents to help them analyze the cases brought before their service. Automation is often very helpful here, as the system will identify the lawsuits relevant to the case in question through key word recognition. Predictions of the outcome of the court cases is now possible with the analysis of past court arguments and rulings by software.

Employers will gladly accept the automation because quite obviously, there will be faster delivery. However, there is a claim that white collar automation cannot totally take over jobs as “the robotics cannot surpass the intellectual power of white collar employees”.

Besides, it is still the human beings that come up with these technologies.

Why won’t you stop disrupting the financial state of the world by continuing to come up with ideas and systems that you know will totally take away even your job!

It goes down to the spirit of humanity. You do not want to watch everyone dying of kwashiorkor because they cannot afford a balanced diet. I’m not sure this disease exists outside Africa by the way.

What are the ADVANTAGES of white-collar automation?

White collar automation will help to generate new jobs. Who balances these machines, who sets them up to do what they have to do? Different Software used in companies has to be programmed and data-bases have to be maintained. It is humans that have to do these.

There are some repetitive tasks that bring about monotony and boredom on the job. Automation will play a great role at taking away the monotony.

Automation tools also help to reduce the risks of getting hurt. They create safe spaces for the humans at work.

DISADVANTAGES of white collar automation

Humans are at risk of losing jobs as robots will be doing most of the tasks in industries and at home.

If employers need to employ these new technologies, they also need to train themselves on how to operate them. Time might not be available and costs will increase.

NB; Employers should make responsible decisions before employing machines and sending away humans as it will be necessary for both humans and machines to operate in the same work space. In like manner, we should take it upon ourselves to learn new things so we can work in automated environments. The machines have no families to feed, you have yourself to look out for financially, and definitely need a job.
