In 2017, the government of Uganda through the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) directed all telecom providers and their subscribers to verify SIM registration against the National Identification & Registration Authority (NIRA) database. SIM cards can only be activated after NIRA verification.

The mandatory SIM card registration requires all customers to present an original national ID for Ugandans, valid passport for foreigners and refugee ID for refugees. UCC introduced a short code 197 to enable subscribers to check their registration status and check ID number.

How to verify SIM card Registration on MTN

  • Dial *160#, then OK.
  • Select 7, My account.
  • Choose 4, Registration Status.
  • Select 1, Customer Registration Status.
  • Your registration status will display on your phone.

OR

  • Open the phone app.
  • Dial *197#, then OK.
  • Select 1, Check Registration Status.
  • Your registration status will display on your phone. Every time I try out, this method shows an error code.

To avoid the long procedure, you can use a combined USSD code of *197*1# or *160*7*4*1# then OK to quickly check if your MTN Sim card is registered with NIRA.

  • Dial *100#, the OK.
  • Select the My Account option.
  • Opt for option 3, My Number/Profile.
  • On the next menu, choose Registration Status.
  • Select, Check Registration Status.
  • Hereafter you will receive an SMS detailing your registration status.

OR

  • Launch the phone app on your mobile phone.
  • Dial *197#, the OK.
  • Select 1, Check Registration.
  • Registration status message will be sent to your phone immediately.
