How to Import Your Outlook Email Messages and Contacts into Gmail

This article covers how to import data from a Hotmail or Windows Live email account, as well as messages and contacts from Outlook into a Gmail account. To perform this transfer, you must have access to Gmail on a desktop computer.

Before you begin the import process, set up your Outlook.com account by copying any emails from your Deleted Items and Junk Email folders that you want to keep into your Inbox (you might not have any emails in these folders that you want to keep; after all, these are folders where you typically just have emails you want to get rid of and do not need).

How to Import Outlook Emails into Gmail

Follow these steps to transfer your Outlook mail messages, folders, and contacts to Gmail:

1. In your web browser, open your Gmail account and click the Settings button next to your profile picture.

2. Select the See all settings option.

3. Click the Accounts and Import option at the top of the Settings page.

4. Click Import mail and contacts in the Import mail and contacts section. Please keep in mind that if you have previously imported, the option will read Import from another address.

5. A popup will appear asking you which account you wish to import from. Enter your Outlook.com email address and press the Continue button.

6. A new window with information will appear. Click the Continue button.

7. In the following box, you’ll confirm Gmail’s access to your Outlook account. After reviewing the conditions, click Yes to proceed, and then exit the Authentication successful screen.

8. On the next page, select the import options. It contains contacts, mail, and new messages for the next 30 days. After checking the boxes, click the Start import button.

9. Once the import option begins, you’ll see a warning that messages and contacts are being imported, click OK to confirm.

You won’t need to take any further action to make the import process work. Regardless of whether your Gmail account is open, the import process will continue in the background. You can choose to log out of your Gmail account or continue to work in it. Depending on how many emails and contacts you are importing, the import process can take several hours or even a few days.
