Hack Wi-Fi passwords using CMD

There are two situations in which you would want to get a password for a certain WI-Fi network. Maybe you lost connection from a network whose password you did not save and you want to recover it using CMD. This is not Hacking, and it’s legal to recover your passwords, anyway. The second and most crucial is getting into the safe zone of network access, stealing the passwords, and getting connected without the owner’s authorization. This is Hacking, and it’s illegal.

Note, any criminal damage and misconduct shall not hold me blamed, this is for educational purposes and we do not intend to cause damage to any computer or networking devices. Let all your actions be blamed on you.

Recovering lost Wi-Fi passwords with CMD

Recovering passwords for the networks you have previously connected to is very easy and possible. The computer system creates a profile for every connection you get on your computer and saves the details in the CMD access root, D directory. So You can retrieve your lost password using Command Prompt in Windows. The procedure is the same for all Windows versions, unlike in Windows 7 or earlier versions, you need to find the stored wireless profiles from the Network and Sharing Center, while in Windows 8 or Windows 10, you’ll have to use the Command Prompt.

Find Windows 7 Wi-Fi passwords

Go to Network and Sharing Center, and click on the “Manage wireless networks” options in the left sidebar.

Does this work for all routers?

This method will not work for all routers but for WiFi devices that have old hardware (modems and routers). Below, I will show you the two types of WiFi security.

Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP)

Wired Equivalent Privacy is the most widely used WiFi security algorithm in the world. This is so old compared to the current structure of the network, backward compatibility, and this is why it appears first in most encryption-type selection menus of many router control panels. Although WEP uses 128-bit and 256-bit encryption, the system is highly vulnerable and it is advisable for all systems relying on WEP to be upgraded. If security upgrades are not an option, then just replace the whole system with an advanced one. This article is meant to undergo a 128-bit encryption and retrieve a WiFi password using the command prompt.

WiFi Protected Access (WPA)

WiFi Protected Access was the WiFi Alliance’s direct response and replacement to the increasingly apparent vulnerabilities of the WEP standard. It was first used in 2003 and uses a 256-bit encryption model which is tough to hack. WAP2 is an updated version of WAP and was introduced in 2006. Since then it has replaced WAP and is now been used mostly in offices and colleges worldwide.

So hacking into a WiFi device is not always easy, and this guide requires you to convince your victim to connect their WiFi to your PC or laptop. Having said that, it could enable you to access other remote systems or devices even once you have disconnected from their WiFi.

Besides knowing the password, you can also use this result to further optimize your WiFi. For example, Under the profile information, you can see mac randomization is disabled. You can turn on the Mac randomization feature to avoid your location tracking based on the device’s MAC address.

How to Turn on Mac Randomization on Windows 10:

Go to settings and click on ‘Network & internet’

Choose the ‘WiFi’ in the left panel and click on the advanced option.

Turn on the ‘Random Hardware Address’ feature under this setting. If your wireless hardware does not support this feature, the “Random Hardware Addresses” section will not show up at all in the settings app.

Once you have turned this on, you are done.

Also, under the connectivity settings, in radio type, you can see the whole list. Channel interference could be another reason for a slow WiFi. So, next time, you might also like to change the radio type settings for a better speed. As far as radio type is concerned, you can also change that in your router for a better connection or connectivity.

Reset your router

If you fail to find your password anyhow. Maybe, your password was changed by someone or anyone, then reset your router and connect to the network via the default password by the router manufacturer.

If you’re using a PPPoE connection, you’ll have to take the burden to call your internet service provider for the connection user-name and password. It will take time to configure the connection and if you want to skip these steps, you can connect your router to a desktop computer and then reset your password.
