1. Hotspotting

This is the most common and easiest way of accessing the internet on your computer using data on your smartphone. Your phone acts as a mobile Wi-Fi router or ‘hotspot’ and your computer taps the data on the phone.

Setting this up is easy but the steps depend on the type of phone you are using.

2. Setting up hotspot on Android

Go to settings > Data and connectivity > Mobile hotspot > configure mobile hotspot. From here you can set the password and the number of users you can accommodate on your hotspot. Ensure that your mobile data connection is switched on to be able to use the hotspot for internet access.

After this, go to your PC, in the bottom right corner for Windows 10 and above, and click on the globe icon. You then switch Wi-Fi on and look out for the network name you set when configuring your hotspot. You then click on it and connect.

3. Setting up a personal hotspot on iOS

The steps for this case are in very many ways similar to those for Android. To be able to activate a personal hotspot on your iPhone, ensure your mobile data is on otherwise you won’t be availed of the personal hotspot option. After switching mobile data on, go to Settings > Personal Hotspot > Click on ‘Allow others to join’. You can also change your password or block other users at this stage.

After this, you switch on Wi-Fi on your computer and connect to the ‘iPhone’ network that appears on the computer.

4. USB tethering

Tethering or using PAM (Phone As Modem) is a way of sharing mobile data from your smartphone to other connected computers or devices.

To set this connection up. Connect the smartphone USB cable to your phone and computer. Open Settings > Network and Connections > Advanced > Hotspot and Tethering. Toggle on the USB tethering option and check to ensure the cable is well-fitted into the phone and computer. After this, the Hotspot and a tethering warning will appear and warn you that using your phone for internet tethering will mean it can’t be used as a storage device.

When this appears, click okay and you will then be able to access the internet on your computer.

5. Using Bluetooth

The first step is to switch on Bluetooth for your computer and phone and then pair them.

You then open your phone’s Bluetooth settings and open the connected devices. You then select the Pair new device option and this will make your device discoverable. You do the same on your computer, switch on Bluetooth, and pair it with your handset device.

Once paired, follow these steps on your mobile phone. Settings > Network and internet > Hotspot and Tethering > switch on Bluetooth tethering. Once this is done you can access the internet on your computer.

However, it is important to note that Bluetooth and USB tethering can only be used for Android devices.
